THE ACROPOLIS OF LINDOS

On the southeast coast of Rhodes lies the picturesque village of Lindos, famous for its narrow cobbled streets and white houses, and above it, dominates the Acropolis of Lindos.

A pebbled pathway will get you to the beautifully preserved Acropolis, set high above the village. The Acropolis of Lindos was a citadel which was fortified by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. First walled in the 6th century BC, the site is now enclosed by barricades built by the Knights of St John. Inside the Acropolis of Lindos, you will encounter ancient remains that include a Temple to Athena Lindia, dating from the 4th century, the Propylaea, the columns of the great Hellenistic Stoa and the Byzantine church of Saint John, which was the governor of the Knights quarters. Silhouetted against the deep blue sky and the endless Aegean sea, the stark white ancient structures offer a captivating spectacle.
